Eric is a Sydney-based contemporary artist working across painting, sculpture, and photomedia. His work explores duality, the intersection between our physical and spiritual identities, and the friction produced where the two meet, a friction more often projected than acknowledged. The abstracted figure is central to this enquiry, where the facade is explored not as the internal identity it appears to cover, but as a marker of the boundary between the physical and spiritual drivers that we can most readily perceive. What cannot be seen asserts itself through what remains.
These ideas are developed through a deliberate shift of scale and medium. Eric begins with freestanding, formless sculptures, which are then relit and translated into oil paintings at an intimate scale. Working on a vermillion imprimatura, he allows this red underpainting to bleed through the surface, the physical friction of the material asserting itself through the layered paint. The result is a body of work steeped in the chiaroscuro of the Renaissance, where abstracted figures and draped forms emerge from a deep, encompassing darkness. Working from life and from digital renderings, Eric builds compositions that carry psychological weight, staging absence and memory. The work remains deliberately unresolved, holding itself open to the viewer’s interpretation rather than narrating a conclusion.
Eric has exhibited at Huw Davies Gallery, Canberra, and Brunswick Street Gallery, Melbourne, and was a finalist in the INPRNT Photography Award presented by Beautiful Bizarre magazine. He has undertaken a residency at APG Works, Sheffield, UK, and his work is held in private collections.
