Eric (b. 1971, Hobart, Australia) is a contemporary artist working across photomedia, painting and sculpture. Based in Melbourne, Australia, his practice explores the gap between who we believe we are and how we behave, tracing the tension between inner conviction and outward performance. Drawing on philosophy and psychology, he examines how a fragile sense of self is constantly negotiated through fear, habit, desire, and the stories we tell about ourselves and others.
Visually, this tension is echoed in his bold, expressive style and his use of stark monochrome environments disrupted by vivid colours, textures and forms. These contrasts create a sense of conflict and negotiation within his work, mirroring the distance between polished facades and lived reality.
A pivotal point in Eric’s career was the creation of The Four, a series in which he moved away from traditional photographic and printing methods and incorporated more of his own hand in the final works. This marked a significant evolution in his practice, deepening the tactile and emotive qualities of his art and more closely aligning the physical act of making with his interest in embodiment and lived experience.
Eric’s works have been exhibited at venues including the Huw Davies Gallery in Canberra and Brunswick Street Gallery in Melbourne, and are held in various private collections. He has been recognised as a finalist in the INPRINT Photography Award organised by Beautiful Bizarre magazine and has undertaken an artist residency at APG Works in Sheffield, United Kingdom, further enriching his practice.
